EFFECT OF RADIATOR COOLING PACKAGE ALIGNMENT ON UNDERHOOD COOLING PERFORMANCE OF AN AGRICULTURAL TRACTOR

Airflow through vehicle underhood plays an important role in engine cooling systems, and hence, in overall system performance. For an efficient underhood design, in terms of engine operating temperature, the underhood airflow has to be analyzed in detail. In the present study, three dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analyses were performed to predict the airflow and associated heat transfer taking place under the hood of a specialty type agriculture tractor. Focus was placed on achieving the optimized air flow path and enhanced thermal performance with proper positioning of various underhood components, such as radiator, fan, coolers, filters, battery support, etc. The results of the CFD analyses indicated that the blockage and air recirculation created by battery case and air filter can be minimized and the amount of air passing through the radiator can be increased considerably. On the whole, a more efficient design can be achieved by utilizing underhood CFD simulations.
