RESEARCH ON FRICTION AND WEAR PERFORMANCE OF HEAVY DUTY DIESEL ENGINE PISTON RINGS AND CYLINDER LINERS

Laboratory tests were presented to investigate the friction and wear behavior of heavy duty diesel engine piston rings and cylinders liners at ambient temperature. A ring segment was tested against a flat specimen of cylinder liners. A comparison was made between the performance of non-textured cylinder liners and honing twill texture cylinder liners. The results indicate that surface texture generated various effects on friction and wear performance at different loads. At ambient temperature, the wear mechanism of cylinder liner was adhesive wear at the low load(200N). Then the wear mechanism turned into the mixed wear of adhesive wear and fatigue wear at the high load (300N or 400N) and the honing twill surface texture improved lubrication. The chromium coating of a piston ring enhanced its wear resistance performance. Further, the honing twill surface texture of cylinder liner plays an important role in reducing the wear loss of piston rings.
